Chrysoteuchia culmella

(Linnaeus, 1758)1293 / 63.080

Morley’s Final Catalogue: (The two forms of this species were separated at Morley’s time and stated as) abundant throughout the County and Britain.

Recent Status: One of the commonest of the Grass Moths in Britain and across Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded summer flying species that comes to light. The larvae feed on the culm of grasses. They hibernate in a cocoon in which they pupate.

Identification: Chrysoteuchia culmella has a straight termen with silver or gold shining cilia and there are black spots on the dorsal half. There is a prominent right angled sub-terminal line. The moth is variably coloured so that fascia can be cream, brown or leaden metallic. This reflects the colour variation of the moth with a base colour cream to sandy brown. Intervein may be shaded darker or leaden. A post median angled line can sometimes be evident and there is a further line complimenting the sub-terminal line that cuts off the apex.
