Monochroa tenebrella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: In root-stalks of Sheeps-sorrel. Found among Rumex acetosella at Brandon (Barrett); and in 1892 at Aldeburgh (Ctw).

Recent Status: A rare Suffolk species.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying in June and July. The moth flies by day but will come to light. The larvae feed in the root-stock of Rumex acetosella and occasionally R. acetosa. They pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: The moth is unicolorous dark purplish fuscous. It is very similar to Eulamprotes unicolorella but for M. tenebrella the tarsi are whitish and segment three of the palp is shorter than segment two, the female has the apical third of the antennae white. E. unicolorella has yet to be recorded in Suffolk. More Info
