Morley’s Final Catalogue: A local-species in south-east England, on Silene. Hitherto found with us in only the Breck: one specimen at Tuddenham in 1911-2 (Nurse, Ent. 1913, 195); Brandon (Lord Walsingham); Burv in 1935 (Whit.); Cavenham 1936 (Gd).
Recent Status: Old records from Breckland and recently on Orford Ness.
Life Style: A single brooded species flying during June, July and August and coming to light. The larvae feed on the seeds of Silene vulgaris and S. nutans. The location of the record on Orford Ness suggests it may also feed on Silene uniflora. They hibernate fully fed and pupate the following year.
Identification: A fairly large pale stripy Coleophora that can be identified by genitalia dissection. The larvae feed on seeds inside a seed pod until their final instar. They then construct a silken case. This includes a piece of the seed husk they have escaped from. The case has a trivalved anal end and is relatively broad and tubular with an oral opening set at about 40 degrees. They feed from this by attaching to the side of seed pods. More Info
