Ocnerostoma piniariella

(Zeller, 1847)444 / 16.023

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A common kind among Scots-fir, but unnoted here for many years. Before 1890 it was taken about Leiston (Grey); Flixton near Bungay (Ctw); and Brandon (Barrett). Rediscovered on Sutton Heath in 1935 (Whit.); at Herringfleet Woods in early April, and West Stow in May, 1936 (Mly).

Recent Status: This species is rarely recorded in Suffolk. The records by Morley refer to both O. piniariella and O. friesei.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies in June and July between the first and second broods of O. friesei. The larvae mine leaves of Pinus sylvestris from the tip to the base. They pupate in a cocoon between pine needles

Identification: The moths appear pale grey with white along the costa and at the apex. The males have grey antennae with white rings. The females have white antennae. This distinguishes them from O. friesei that have uniform grey antennae.
