Ephestia kuehniella

Zeller, 18791475 / 62.063

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Found to be abundant in a flour-mill at Homersfield during July-August 1888 (Ctw). Taken singly at electric light in Ipswich, August 1895 (Mly) and 1898 (Pyett); Southwold in 1932 (Wir).

Recent Status: There are coastal records for this species in Suffolk.

Life Style: Ephestia kuehniella is primarily synanthropic. It could occasionally arrive as an immigrant but is unable to survive and breed outdoors in the British climate. It is associated with wheat flour but has also been found feeding on a variety of other stored products. The larvae feed from a system of silken galleries and pupate in or close to the feeding location. It is multi-brooded.

Identification: Ephestia species can be difficult to identify. Particularly since Ephestia woodiella is common in the county. The other species could easily be mistaken as faded or aberrant E. woodiella. E. woodiella has a broad area of light orange, brown, reddish brown or pink shade along the whole length of the forewing dorsum. However this can be reduced or faded. E. kuehniella is a larger species but there is size overlap. It is overall a grey species and lacks any brown or pink shading. The pre median line is more sharply defined and indent compared to that of E. woodiella. This is less so for the post median line. Where there is uncertainty identification by genitalia dissection is decisive More Info .
