Eudonia lacustrata

=Dipleurina lacustrata

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Rather local: Copdock (Hkg); Waldringfield in 1903-7 (Wir: EMM. 1904, 80); at Monks Soham light (Mly); Lowestoft (Bd); Gorleston (D). Common at Brandon (Barrett).

Recent Status: One of the commoner scopariids across the county.

Life Style: A single brooded summer flying species with a peak in mid-July. The larvae feed on mosses in the year following egg laying and pupate during late spring or early summer.

Identification: The Scopariinae (Scoparia and Eudonia) can be difficult to identify. Some species are easier than others. Before considering wing markings it is important to note the size, the shape when at rest and the forewing shape. All forewing markings can be important but of particular importance are the white sub-terminal markings, the post median line and the stigmata. They possess orbicular, claviform and reniform stigmata. Worn individuals might not be identified except by genitalia dissection.
Eudonia lacustrata is a medium sized scopariid with a triangular shape at rest. The dorsal part of the reniform stigma has an oval mark that is usually clear white. The sub-terminal line is broken and forms two marks in the costal half and three in the dorsal half. They are usually clearly separate. The median band appears pale on the moth as a whole. The forewing may have a brownish tint to the white areas. The post median line is dentate but not greatly sinuate. There is some variation in the markings.
