Lampronia capitella

(Clerck, 1759)133 / 9.001

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Discovered by Dr. Whittingham at Westerfield during 1934-5.

Recent Status: A rare species in Suffolk with just one record.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded flying by day and occasionally coming to light during May and June. The larvae feed in the fruit of Gooseberry and currants. They hibernate in a cocoon on the stem. Following hibernation they feed inside new shoots where they will pupate.

Identification: The moth is dark brown sometimes with a purple sheen. There are prominent white or cream spots on the tornus and opposing on the costa. There is a white mark near the dorsum base that may extend towards the costa, sometimes reaching it. The moth has an orange or yellow head which distinguishes it from the similar but smaller L. luzella that has a dark head. More Info
