Incurvaria pectinea

Haworth, 1828129 / 8.001

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed.

Recent Status: Recorded locally in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies by day and occasionally comes to light during April and May. The larvae initially feed on a leaf of Betula, Carpinus, Corylus, Malus, Tilia and Alnus. They mine a blotch which they cut out as a case. There are usually several per leaf. After dropping to the ground they move progressively through larger bivalve cases cut from dead leaves that they feed on. They pupate before the winter.

Identification: The moth is overall very similar to I. masculella but more subdued. So the head is less bright, the wings not so dark, the spots not clearly defined and the male antennae less strongly pectinate. More Info

Verification Grade Comment: pectinea and masculella are confusable
