Eucosma tripoliana

(Barrett, 1880)1193 / 49.272

Morley’s Final Catalogue: A hundred times as plentiful as the last kind (E. lacteana) in the saltmarshes of Waldringfield and Shingle-street in Holleslev, 1928-35 (Whit, Wir); Southwold in 1897 (Ctw).

Recent Status: A common species on Suffolk salt-marsh that wanders. Morley in 1937 records this species as E. aemulana owing to nomenclature confusion at this time. There is no evidence that E aemulana as distinct from E. tripoliana has been recorded in Suffolk.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying from July to early September. The larvae feed on the flowers and seeds of Aster tripolium. They hibernate in a cocoon on the ground in which they pupate.

Identification: The moth is quite variable but generally shows a clear dorsal patch, ocellus with black dashes and costal strigulae. More Info
