Status Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed. Nepticulids were not well studied and only 21 species listed.
Recent Status: The species is recorded in Suffolk.
Life Style: A single brooded species that flies during June. The larvae feed on leaves of Salix species. They pupate in a cocoon on the ground or the fallen leaf.
Identification: The moth has shiny black wings with a clear large white mid dorsal spot. They have an orange head tuft and white scape and cilia. There is only one other Nepticulid in Britain and Suffolk with a similar patterning. Stigmella catharticella has the spot less clear and placed at the tornus. The cilia of the smaller and paler winged S. catharticella are not clear white but it has a white collar. The collar of E. intimella is brown. Genitalia dissection can separate these species where it is not clear from the adult moth appearance. The larva mines the mid-vein from the oviposition site before mining a wide gallery or blotch with the frass usually distributed in two lines either side of the larval feeding. https://mothdissection.co.uk/species.php?Tx=Ectoedemia_intimella | Determination by Genitalia Examination Required | |
