Status
Morley’s Final Catalogue: Plentiful among Scots pine at Orford in July 1902 (Gbs), Aldeburgh and Southwold in 1897 (Ctw) and Sutton Heath 1927-35, as well as near Thetford (Whit). In great numbers at Ampton in 1910 (Nurse, Ent. 1911, 221); beaten from Scots pine at Mildenhall in August 1931 (Mly).

Recent Status: A generally common species in Suffolk.

Life Style: The moth is single brooded flying from May to August and coming to light. The larvae feed in shoots of Pinus sylvestris during the year following oviposition. They pupate in the larval habitation.

Identification: The moth is a slightly smaller version of R. buoliana but the pattern differs and this should be observed as they overlap in size. R. buoliana has a prominent thoracic crest that is insignificant in R. pinicolana. The females of R. pinicolana are larger than the males. https://mothdissection.co.uk/species.php?Tx=Rhyacionia_pinicolana
