Morley's Final Catalogue: Somewhat scarce, and doubtless decling with our felled woodlands. Larvae in tolerable plenty in woods round Ipswich, and in woods near Stowmarket (Crewe, Nat. 1858, 37); but at neither Playford nor Brandeston (Gr). Sporadic at Copdock in 1896 (Hkg), Belstead; Bentley Woods singly in 1893-4 (Mly), 1895 (Baylis) and 1899 (Platten); Blaxhall, Needham, Ickworth, Downham (one larva on oak: Norgate); Mildenhall in 1936 (Gd) and Brandon.

Recent Suffolk Status: Common. Has increased and become more widespread in recent years.

Life history: Double-brooded. The second brood is much larger than the first. Can come to light in numbers in woodland.
Larvae have been found on various trees in Suffolk. They are very variable in colour, from reddish to white.

Identification: Unmistakeable.

Habitat: Woodland, parkland, hedgerows, gardens.

Recorded in 46 (79%) of 58 10k Squares.
