Morley’s Final Catalogue: Also attached to Cerastium. Hemley salt-marshes in 1931 (Wir); Leiston (Grey); Lowestoft (Bd); and flew to light at Bungay in 1903 (Mann; Trans, i, 36). Brandon (Wrn).
Recent Status: A rare species in Suffolk with a scattered distribution.
Life Style: A single brooded mid-summer species that comes to light. The larvae feed in the shoots of Stellaria and Cerastium in the spring following oviposition. They bore down into the shoots and will move between shoots. They later feed on the leaves before pupating on the ground.
Identification: This species is one of the darker Caryocolum species. It has a dominance of brown or orange brown in the first three quarters of the wing and is then predominantly black beyond the two opposing white or slightly cream spots that do not meet. It lacks clear black, brown or white patches of C. marmorea. If there is doubt in the identification then genitalia dissection is required. More Info
