Diurnea fagella

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Abundantly sitting on trunks of oaks and occasionally other trees from late March to 10 May at Bentley Woods, Ipswich, Nacton, Henley, Hemingston, Braiseworth, Stuston, Beccles; and Brandon (Wrn). On sallow blossom at Fritton on 3 April 1936. Females quite rare.

Recent Status: A very common late winter, early spring species.

Life Style: A single brooded species. The males come to light from February till April. The females have reduced wings and can be found along with males by searching trunks and fences by torch-light. The larvae feed between spun leaves of a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. They pupate on the ground to pass the winter.

Identification: There are no similar species on the wing in the early months. The appearance of the forewing remains but the colours vary considerably. More Info
