Morley’s Final Catalogue: Common everywhere, on under-side of maple-leaves. Ipswich and Whitton (Pyett), Aspall, &c. (Mly) Glemham Parva (Bloomf).
Recent Status: Fairly well recorded in Suffolk. Morley’s comments refer to both P. acerifoliella and P. joannisi.
Life Style: A double brooded species that can be found from May to September. The larvae feed on Acer platanoides. They pupate in a cocoon in the larval habitation. They pass the winter in the pupal stage.
Identification:P. acerifoliella and P. joannisi are very similar white winged species with broad dark edged ochre fascia. They may be distinguished by two characters. The angle made by the first fascia is 90 degrees for P. acerifoliella. It is obtuse for P. joannisi. The short basal striae are placed roughly opposite in P. acerifoliella. They are clearly alternate in P. joannisi. The larvae of P. joannisi create a white blister blotch between veins, underneath and away from the leaf edge. More Info
