Ectoedemia erythrogenella

(Joannis, 1908)32 / 4.092

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Not listed. Nepticulids were not well studied and only 21 species listed.

Recent Status: Rarely recorded in Suffolk. Formerly found not far from the coast. Showing signs of spreading inland in recent years.

Life Style: The moth is on the wing March to September. Oviposition occurs close to a vein on the upper surface of Rubus fruticosa. The larvae feed from late autumn through the winter, sometimes into the spring as late as April when they pupate in a cocoon on the plant.

Identification: This species has a coastal distribution in Britain. The moth is a small species with a dull orange head tuft and collar and a paler scape. There are opposing white costal and dorsal spots that may join into a fascia. The moth can be identified by breeding out from a mine or by genitalia dissection. Information on the genitalia is available in a publication by Erik J. van Nieukerken, Tijdschrift voor entomologie 128 1985 1–164 available from Biodiversity Heritage Library.org.
The larva creates a narrow gallery alongside a vein before they feed in a blotch. The blotch is characterised by becoming a purplish crimson colour. More Info
