Recent Status: A rare species in Suffolk. A small colony established in a garden in Hollesley during the late 2010s.

Life Style: A single brooded species flying at night and coming to light during late June, July and August. The larvae hibernate and feed on Origanum. They pupate on the foodplant.

Identification: Merrifieldia have narrow curved forewing lobes. M. baliodactylus has pale cream forewings with a small elongate black mark on the costa beyond the cleft and a narrow line of black scales on the basal half of the costa.
Following hibernation the larvae bite half-way through a terminal shoot stem of Origanum causing it to wilt. They feed on the wilted leaves. More Info
