Phycitodes saxicola

(Vaughan, 1870)1484 / 62.059

Morley’s Final Catalogue: (distinct from H. nebulella, of Mem. 122).-Of this doubtfully indigenous Phycitid a female flew into light at Monks Soham on 6 August 1938 (Mly, teste Hayward).

Recent Status: Not a commonly recorded species but may be under-recorded owing to the need for dissection to confirm the identity.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies at night and comes to light. The larvae feed on the flower and seed heads of a variety of Compositae. The larvae pass the winter in a cocoon on the ground where they pupate in spring.

Identification: Phycitodes saxicola is a similar size to P. maritima and Homoeosoma nimbella. It lacks the narrow black costa of H. nebulella. It is however too variably marked to allow it to be identified with certainty without genitalia dissection.
