Homoeosoma nebulella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1480 / 62.055

Morley’s Final Catalogue: By no means rare, on both the coast and Breck: Several at light in Ipswich during July 1895-1901 (Mlv, Pye«) ; bred at Waldringfield in 1933 (Wir); Blaxhall (Hkr); Southwold and one at Aldeburgh (Ctw). Near Timworth in 1911 (Nurse), Tuddenham (Crf), Brandon (Barrett), Cavenham 1936 (Gd).

Recent Status: There are records at various locations in Suffolk. Homoeosoma nebulella is a rare species.

Life Style: A single brooded species that flies by day and night and comes to light. The larvae feed on the flowers and developing seeds of a range of Compositae. In addition to thistles these also include Sunflowers and Ox-eye Daisy. They pupate in a light cocoon at ground level. It is not clear if pupation takes place before or after winter.

Identification: Homoeosoma nebulella is similar to Phycitodes species. H. nebulella has a dark spot, that is only around a fifth of the way from the dorsum across the wing, as one of the spots in the basal group of spots. This spot is a little closer to the base than the centrally placed dot. When three spots are seen in this group the central one is posterior to both. The sandy colour of the wing has a whitish streak that lies just short of the costa. The costa is narrowly dark. H. nebulella is a large species. It appears narrower winged and weaker marked than Phycitodes binaevella which is a similar size. More Info
