Ortholepis betulae

(Goeze, 1778)1450 / 62.011
=Metriostola betulae

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Taken at Copdock by the Revd. J. H. Hocking (Bloomfield's Supplement).

Recent Status: Ortholepis betulae is an immigrant to East Suffolk.

Life Style: The species is single brooded flying in mid-summer and coming to light. The black and white longitudinally striped larvae feed on birch leaves from a webbing, where they pupate during early summer.

Identification: A dark brown or black moth with a scattering of white scales. The white scales form weakly marked sub-basal, pre-median and post-median lines on the forewing. There is an area of raised black scales between the sub-basal and pre-median line which is diagnostic. The most likely confusion species is Pyla fusca. The costal edge of P. fusca is straight centrally and gently curved on O. betulae.
