Anania lancealis

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1377 / 63.017
=Perinephela lancealis

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Very much scarcer than in south England. Ipswich, Playford, Stowmarket, Glemham Magna and Beccles, all before 1890; no later records. Never seen here (Morley).

Recent Status: A locally common species in suitable habitats where Hemp Agrimony grows.

Life Style: A summer flying species that flies at night and comes to light. The larvae feeding on Eupatorium cannabinum curl down the edge of a leaf to feed from. Wood Sage, Woundwort and Common Ragwort have been also been used as foodplants. They hibernate in a cocoon where they pupate in spring.

Identification: A readily identified species particularly the male Anania lancealis that has an elongate forewing with an acute apex. The female has shorter squarer forewings but is patterned the same in brown on a white to cream wing colour. The similarly marked, rounded, hindwings are usually visible at rest.

Recorded in 34 (59%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1976.
