Gypsonoma oppressana
Poplar Shoot

(Treitschke, 1835)1170 / 49.280

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Somewhat frequent, on poplar. Ipswich in 1902 (Pyett) and 1929—35 (Whit); Lowestoft (Bd); Brandon (Wrn). A nice series Aying at dusk round poplar in Covehithe lane in 1934 (Wir).

Recent Status: Scarce in Suffolk.

Life Style: This is a single brooded species flying during June and July that comes to light. The larvae feed on Populus leaves. They pupate in a flimsy cocoon away from the larval habitation.

Identification: This species has a whitish forewing heavily speckled and striated with a dark grey brown becoming more ferruginous towards the apex. There are long black dashes in the ocellus. The basal patch is not distinct except on the dorsum. There is a dark and irregular band from the costa at about one half that reaches half way across the wing. Just distal to this and centrally is a small very dark spot. There is a small dark pre-tornal mark.
The larvae feed by grazing the underside of a leaf beneath a web. They then construct a silken and frass tube from which they graze and then bore into a stem and twig leaving the tube behind. More Info
