Within the grey British Cnephasia species only two can be reliably identified without examination of the genitalia. C. communana flies early in the year so that any Cnephasia found during April or early May will be C. communana. C. pumicana is a small species that is very pale slightly brownish grey and very lightly marked such that the distal edge of the central band fades into the pale background colour. No other species is so small and lightly marked. If genitalia dissection is not carried out then all other specimens must be recorded under this aggregate.
