Morley's Final Catalogue: Referring also to Cabbage moth: Both at Sudbury in 1836 (Ent. Mag. iv, 223); and still abound throughout the county. Of the later (Dot moth), imagines are sometimes a pest at light in Ipswich and larvae in great profusion (Ransom) at Sudbury.
Recent Suffolk Status: Common and widespread in the county, but some evidence of a recent decline in numbers.
Life history: Single-brooded. Formerly very common at light in some locations, but more recently numbers have reduced with some locations reporting very low numbers or none at all. Larvae were found fairly regularly in the recent past in gardens, feeding on a wide variety of plants.
Identification: The only similar species is Oak rustic and that is much smaller and flies later in the year.
Habitat: A wide variety of habitats including gardens. Recorded in 55 (95%) of 58 10k Squares. First Recorded in 1836. Last Recorded in 2023. |
