Craniophora ligustri

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2291 / 73.047

Morley's Final Catalogue: Very thinly scattered throughout the County, except perhaps south-west and Lothingland. Copdock, Bentley (formerly), Playford (Ent. Wk. Intell. i, 1856, 164), Waldringfield (James), Brandeston, Needham, Stowmarket, bred and taken at sugar near Timworth in 1911 (Nurse), on sugar at Tuddenham (Vivian). Aldeburgh, Beccles; at light in Bungay (Mn).

Recent Suffolk Status: Common. Formerly very scarce in the county, in recent years numbers and distribution have increased dramatically. With Ash dieback very widespread now in Suffolk it seems the moth has switched foodplant and is possibly using Privet more regularly.

Life history: In Suffolk, this moth now appears to be double-brooded with much larger numbers noted in the second generation which flies right into September.

Identification: Variable in colour, with some examples all dark olive-green and others with paler areas. The dark green colour should separate this species from similar ones.

Habitat: Woodlands, parkland, gardens.

Recorded in 49 (84%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1911.
Last Recorded in 2023.
