Morley's Final Catalogue: Ranges through E. Anglia, but is quite rare with us. Wheeler of Norwich secured three examples in a single night at Brandon in 1874; and no more was heard of it till about 1900, when two turned up on sugar in Norgate's garden, near the west edge of Bury town. No later records till two came to light at Sotterley in 1935 (Btn).

Recent Suffolk Status: Extinct in Suffolk. Not seen since 1990. Last UK record was in 2007, in Norfolk and now very rare or even extinct nationally. Prone to extreme population fluctuations in the past.

Life history: Single-brooded. Emerges early summer then aestivates in outbuildings, where it was often disturbed. Supposedly came to sugar more regularly than coming to light.

Identification: The similar Dotted rustic is paler in colour and has the row of black dots across the wing.

Habitat: Formerly found in marshes and wetland sites.
