Langmaid's Yellow Underwing
Noctua janthina

[Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775 2110a / 73.347

Morley's Final Catalogue: Not listed. The first UK record was in 1991.

Recent Suffolk Status: First found in Suffolk in 2005, at Bawdsey (M. Deans). Now a possible very local resident, mainly near the coast. Increasing and starting to turn up at inland sites. Numbers boosted by immigration.

Life history: Single-brooded.

Identification: Lesser broad-bordered yellow underwing is very similar. There are no features on the upperside of these moths that are reliable, although Langmaid's can be darker. The main features are the upperside of the hindwing, which on Langmaid's should have a thick black border all the way around the yellow, creating a yellow spot. Lesser-broad bordered yellow underwing has more extensive yellow and less black, with the black not all the way around the yellow. Also, on the underside of the forewing Lesser-broad bordered has black finger projections that extend into the outer area. Langmaid's has this edge smooth or diffuse.

Habitat: Mainly coastal sites but also gardens.

Verification Grade Comment: Specimens must be retained / photographed showing hindwing and underside of forewing for confirmation.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 21 (36%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 2005.
Last Recorded in 2023.
