(Clerck, 1759) 1935 / 70.256

Morley's Final Catalogue: By no means a pest with us: quite uncommon or overlooked. Since 1890 noted only sparingly in Bentley Woods; Ipswich (Ml); Needham Market in 1903 (Platten). A single specimen at Monks Soham on 23 Nov 1934 (Mly). Rare at Gorleston (D).

Recent Suffolk Status: Abundant.

Life history: Single-brooded. Can appear as early as September and linger on until February. A very variable species. Large numbers can attend light traps placed in Oak woodland. Both sexes can be found after dark on tree trunks. Larvae are regularly found in the county every year feeding on a wide range of trees.

Identification: Scarce umber is golden-yellow in colour and Spring usher is much smaller.

Habitat: Mainly woodland, but also occurs in scrub and gardens.

Recorded in 47 (81%) of 58 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1940.
